The Scrovegni Chapel was the artistic highlight of my trip to Italy, and the most astonishing artistic experience of my life. Its unified conception and perfect painterly technique, to my mind, far outshine the Sistine. So I really didn't have high expectations for the little book, but I was very pleased. It works for me mostly as a mnemonic but it is very detailed and the correlation of the Scripture texts and Giotto's work is very illuminating. Above all it renews the sense I had in the chapel that Giotto was working not only from an deepseated artistic compulsion but from a deeply held faith. By contrast the Sistine is like the clumps of picture in a half-completed jigsaw with the sky not put together yet. Any visitor to Padua should strain every nerve to get to the Scrovegni.
