Reviews
Before Giotto, Western European art followed Byzantine artistic conventions. Human figures were flat and faces showed very little emotion. Giotto re-introduced realism into European painting. The figures in his painting were complex and filled with human emotion. Giotto's innovations laid the groundwork for the artistic explosion that followed during the Renaissance. No study of the Medieval period can be complete without learning about this revolutionary artist."Giotto and Medieval Art" is part of the wonderful Masters of Art series. This is an Italian series of art history books that were translated into English in the early 1990's. The writing is informed and first rate. What really makes the series are the fantastic illustrations. The illustrator, Sergio Riccardi is very talented and his recreations of Medieval life will be certain to entertain child and parent alike. This is a great book that can be purchased used at a reasonable price. Highly recommended.
